Looking for good pizza? / by Emma Paling McGough

Pancetta and mushroom pizza and the North Sea. It’s like a Monet!

Last week I had the really good fortune of photographing food for Napoli Wood Fired Pizza in Seaton Carew. I’m not even kidding, when the job came my way I jumped at the chance. I’ve had their pizzas before, my daughter (a pizza connoisseur) has had their pizzas, it’s fair to say that we really love them. I love their photos (and I do not say that lightly about phone photography!) and I really like their social media presence in general.

I’m a huge fan of a wood fired pizza, I’m an even bigger fan of local folk carving out an existence in a world full of corporate chains and big businesses. Carl at Napoli Wood Fired Pizza is a dude doing just that.

Carl and the pizza oven

The night I met him, it was a cold, blustery, wintery late afternoon and the light was failing fast. My brief was one that meant we couldn’t hang about. Turns out wood fired pizza can be cooked in minutes!

Carl made 5 pizzas, all with different toppings; margarita, pepperoni, veggie, 3 cheese, and pancetta with mushroom. They were a joy to photograph and, as it turns out, the pancetta and mushroom one was a joy to eat!

I have to say that I have photographed in many venues but none have been as welcoming, accommodating, and as friendly as these guys are.

Not a bad view

Seriously, if you live around Seaton Carew, the next time you want to pick up the phone for a Dominos or a Pizza Hut pizza, consider giving Napoli Wood Fired Pizza a go. Even if you’re not that local, I can for certain say that eating pizza while watching the North Sea batter the beach from the comfort of my car is an experience that’s good for the soul.
